Every year, and especially through the summer months, Nicholson Nurseries exhibits at shows and events around the country. It's an opportunity for us to get out and about, meet some of our customers on their own turf, and introduce the wider world to the plants and services we offer.

Some of these are the major shows, such as The Royal (seen above during a washout 2007 event, closed early thanks to torrential rain) or the Malvern "Three Counties Show", but we also attend less well known events, perhaps a little closer to home, such as the Moreton Show, which is a perennial favourite.

We also stage two Open Days each year - one in the Spring, and a second in the Autumn. To discover what some of these days are like, please visit our Open Day archives by clicking on these links:

The Next Open Day

The next Nicholsons Open Day is scheduled for Thursday October 9th, starting at 1:00pm.

The theme of this year's Autumn Open day will be much more trade-orientated than in the past (hence the weekday scheduling) and will be of particular interest to Landscapers, Garden Designers and professional horticulturalists. Serious amateur gardeners will, of course, be welcome to attend!

As well as an opportunity to tour the nursery and examine our stock, there will also be a series of activity workshops, including demonstrations and discussions about Pests and Diseases, Climate Change, Species Suitability and Fruit Tree Pruning. Refreshments will be available throughout the afternoon.

We would be delighted if those planning to attend the Open Day could register their interest by clicking here and sending us a brief note. We can then send you further information nearer the time.

Shows Scheduled for 2008 include:

The Three Counties Show
Friday June 13th, Saturday June 14th and Sunday June 15th 2008
Staged on the splendid Three Counties showground just south of Malvern, within sight of the famous Hills, The Three Counties show has long been regarded as the region’s rural showcase. It is still the area's biggest annual event, and is a celebration of the people and animals that make up the very best of British farming, country living and rural life from across Gloucestershire, Herefordshire and Worcestershire and bordering counties. Nicholsons has previously exhibited at the Spring Gardening Show, also held on the Three Counties show ground, but this will be our first visit to the "big one".

The Game Fair
Friday July 25th - Sunday July 27th 2008
The Country Landowner's Association Game Fair is one of the world's largest and most prestigious countryside exhibitions and will be celebrating its 50th anniversary this year with a visit to Blenheim Palace, just fifteen minutes down the road from the Nicholsons nursery at North Aston. The Game Fair moves around the country each year, being staged at a different country estate each time, and we are delighted to have the show on our doorstep in 2008. Every imaginable country sport and rural activity is comprehensively represented, and this annual event should appeal as much to country sports enthusiasts as it should to anyone with a passion and appreciation of the countryside, whatever their age.

Wychwood Forest Fair
Sunday 31st August 2008
This is Wychwood's own green country show, staged at Capp's Lodge Plain off the A361 between Burford and Shipton under Wychwood close to an ancient copse that was part of the once much larger Forest of Wychwood. Details for 2008 are yet to be confirmed, but if last year's Show is anything to go by, this will be another great occasion. There will be a Children's Fun Fair and Story Teller, Flying Teddies, Ferret Racing, several local Morris Dancing sides and other entertainments. As well as displays of the Wychwood Project's work, many other local conservation and community groups will be at the Fair. A wide range of Rural Crafts will be on display, including stonewalling and blacksmithing. There will also be an Arts and Crafts tent, displaying and selling a wide range of goods.
There will be plenty of Local Food suppliers and farm produce, lots of refreshments, locally produced ice cream and - last but not least - a beer tent selling beer from the local Wychwood Brewery, based in Witney. Altogether, in excess of 160 stalls and activities are expected, and entrance is a very reasonable £5 per adult, under 16s free.

Moreton Show
Saturday 6th September 2008
This delightful and very traditional one-day Agricultural and Horse Show is always one of the best of the year, and 2008 should be no exception. The Moreton Show includes major livestock classes, with horses, cattle [including the national Show of Poll Hereford Cattle], sheep [including the National Show of Cotswold Sheep and other Rare Breeds], goats and poultry being judged, as well as food, retail and Home & Garden marquees, with hundreds of trade stands and a full day's entertainment. The site itself is old permanent pasture in a parkland setting and there are no permanent buildings, which means the Show is built up in the traditional way with marquees and hurdle pens giving a true country show atmosphere. There are also competitions for homecrafts, flowers, vegetables and even scarecrows. Around 250 tradestands provide everything from a tractor to a toy and a wide selection of food and drink - both to eat at once and to take home.

Newbury Show
Saturday 20th and Sunday 21st September 2008
The Royal County of Berkshire Show, staged at the Newbury Showground, beside the M4, is organised by the Newbury & District Agricultural Society, and this year they have pulled off quite a coup by signing up the Household Cavalry to be their star attraction. With men and horses are picked from The Life Guards and The Blues and Royals Squadrons of The Household Cavalry Regiment, this display will include the famous "Musical Ride", first staged in 1882. Aside from this singular spectacle, the Show will include all the usual Country Show attractions, including livestock, trade stands, a large horticultural section (including Horticulture Tent with floral art, inter-village and display competitions, the “Gardens of Distinction” area with show gardens, and the WI's "best dressed pair of pants" competition, to raise awareness of ovarian cancer. There will also be a cookery marquee and equine events.
